Director Nicholas Jasenovec gives a walkthrough (with clips) of Paper Heart, the partly-scripted, so-called “hybrid documentary” starring Charlyne Yi & Michael Cera (the billing order is important here). Despite labeling herself as a love skeptic, Yi heads out on a journey with a filmmaker friend in hopes of finding answers about the state of modern romance, where she meets Cera (her real-life squeeze) along the way. Shooting took place over 10 weeks, including stops in Toronto and Paris, and a month long, coast-to-coast road trip, where many off-the-cuff sequences were filmed.
Though this is the first feature length project for Jasenovec (he’s worked mainly with video shorts like this one with SNL’s Bill Hader) he said that he’s learned a few things from Judd Aapatow, who also hooked him up with Charlyne. Jasonovec and Yi co-wrote Hearts, which has enjoyed some of the biggest pre-Sundance buzz over the past few weeks. First showing for the film is at the festival this Saturday, and if never becomes a crossover hit, it looks tailor-made for a double feature paired with whatever Miranda July rolls out next.
